25 years experience

Jake Avancena graduated from the Virginia Military Institute and served in the Army for four years. While engaged in an Asian Studies graduate program, he had the opportunity to live and work in Japan for two years. In Japan, he was exposed to the efficacy of Oriental medicine and decided to pursue a career in Oriental medicine. He graduated with a Master's in Oriental medicine from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in San Diego, California in 1996.   He also studied with Dr. Nambudripad MD in Los Angeles in order to learn her NAET treatments.

After being licensed by the Medical Board of California, he practiced in San Diego for two years and then returned to Virginia to practice in 1998. He has served as the President of the Acupuncture Society of Virginia. He has been licensed by the Medical Boards of California, Maryland and Virginia. Jake is also certified in acupuncture and Chinese herbology by the National Certification Commission of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM).  He has also developed a variety of techniques that incorporate modalities learned from other alternative health medical professionals.  He developed and practices using a highly successful protocol geared towards healing complex, chronic disorders.

My Philosophy

My goal has always been to evaluate and offer my recommendations for treatment options to the patient.  With the input from the patient, I try to devise the treatment that will achieve the most successful healing with the least invasiveness for the most economical cost.

Depending upon the issue(s) that the patient is dealing with, I will treat using a variety of healing methods including:  Laser Meridian Imprinting; acupuncture; Chinese herbal medicine; dietary recommendations and/or Tui Na (a manipulative therapy from Chinese medicine).

I now focus primarily on chronic immune-related disorders and problems involving multiple systems in the body.  This often involves allergies, stomach, sinus, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, asthma and other seemingly unrelated issues.  By observing and working with the patient to discover signs and symptoms, we can usually find multiple causes and begin to resolve these complex syndromes in a relatively short time period.
